Chapter Twenty-nine

The records room was a windowless storage facility that seemed to stretch on for miles, with four aisles separated by metal shelves that were stacked high with cardboard evidence boxes and folders. Randall held open the door for her, then turned on his heels and headed down the middle aisle. Goosebumps peppered Helen’s arms as she followed, breaking into a jog to keep up with him.

‘I am capable of going through these. I was doing this job while you were still in nappies.’

‘I know, but it will be quicker if we’re both looking.’

‘Whatever you say, Sergeant.’

Randall grabbed a pile of manila folders and took a seat at the table opposite.

Helen grabbed the next pile, the ticking of the clock above their heads sounding like a boom in the silence. It was over an hour later before Randall spoke again.

‘I’m not angry, I know you’re just taking advantage of a situation, and I would probably do the same.’

Helen closed the folder. ‘What are you talking about?’

‘You think if your dad wasn’t a DCI that they’d promote some overzealous WPC?’

‘I’ve worked hard.’

He scoffed and looked back at his notes.

‘I’m still the sergeant in the department.’

‘Acting sergeant.’

‘It wasn’t my fault you didn’t get the promotion.’

‘We all know your dad was bent, and what’s that old saying? The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.’

Helen’s heart pounded, and her stomach twisted.

‘Tell me,’ he carried on. ‘Who paid for your education? That fancy university degree you enjoy rubbing in people’s faces.’

Helen’s heart felt like it was in a vice, being squeezed slowly. The same anger she felt before surged in her. She wanted to tell him to take a running jump. Not that it would do any good. That she only did her university course to please her father, and even then, that didn’t work.

‘I don’t . . .’

‘All paid with backhanders, and he was good friends with DCI Whyte.’

‘My dad paid for my education, that’s true, but I’ve given everything that I can to do a good job, and I’m nothing like my father.’

‘I’ll believe that when I see it.’

‘I nearly died on the job last month, and all I want is to find out what happened to Moira McKenzie and get justice for Tina French.’

He dragged a hand across his stubble. ‘Fine, I’m nearly through this lot.’

Craven headed towards his car, downing a couple of pills as he did so. His temples throbbed, and his jaw was stiff. He rubbed it and the pain spread. The icy pain trickled down his arms as though cold water was spreading through his veins. He slumped in the driver’s seat of the Granada. Gasping for breath, he massaged his chest and closed his eyes. A knock on the window startled him, and he looked over to see a uniformed officer peering in.

Craven wound the window down a crack.

‘What is it, son?’ he asked.

‘Sorry, I just wanted to check you were all right?’

‘I’m fine.’

‘It’s just you looked . . .’

Craven turned the key in the ignition and the engine purred into life.
